Book That! Concertina-SLot Book

Instructor: Derek Bacchus

Friday September 11, 2026

Time: 6:00pm – 8:30pm

Fee: $60 All materials (and use of tools) included

Maximum capacity is 8

We continue this series of mini-workshops (by popular demand!) from last summer where we made three different book structures (one each month). Beginners are very welcome, or if you just want to continue learning in this super-accessible format. All tools, and materials are provided, plus beautifully designed instructions to take home with you so you can do it all over again.

This simple, but elegant book structure combines three 16-page sections with a concertina-accordion-fold connector. After that we will add unique covers that will use a favorite decorative paper of your own choosing, brought from home (a 12"x12" sheet to make the two separate covers).

All tools and materials are provided for this workshop.

Book That! The Japanese Stab-Sewn Tortoise Shell Book

Instructor: Derek Bacchus

Friday November 13, 2026

Time: 6:00pm – 8:30pm

Fee: $60 All materials (and use of tools) included

Maximum capacity is 8

Welcome to the last mini-bookbinding workshop of the year for anyone who wants an easy and fun introduction to the world of making books. This is another foray into Japanese stab-sewn bookmaking, but with more complexity along the spine…the beautiful tortoise-shell pattern (Kikko-toji). We will practice the sewing pattern first on a cover board template, with pre-made holes, then move on to making a sample book with all the measurements included on the back cover. A basic bookbinding tools, techniques and paper selection overview will be included when we begin. Become a bookbinder in two hours!
