DRAWING: "Anyone Can Learn to Draw"
with Deirdre Shibano

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THIS CLASS, PLEASE EMAIL THE ART CENTER.  WHEN WE HAVE ENOUGH PARTICIPANTS TO OFFER THE CLASS, WE WILL SET THE MEETING TIMES. thank you

SESSION 1: LAYING THE FOUNDATION:

This will be an Academic Approach to drawing. The student will glean the benefit of specific techniques which can be applied to all subjects and genres of drawing. A secure toolbox of techniques will build a sound foundation as we venture into more complex drawing subjects in future sessions. Topics covered in Drawing Contour drawing, blind drawing, measured drawing, perspective, composition, value/shading and creating form realistically through a variety of techniques and medium.
Week one: Contour drawing and “blind drawing: By using a variety of still life subjects, we will learn to realize the volume of objects rather than merely the outline. This approach to drawing enables us to see, feel and render the volume of the shape. This techniques applies to still life, landscape sketches, portrait or figurative work.
Week two: An Atelier approaches to creating form: We will explore traditional cross-hatching techniques to define three dimensional objects. White on white objects with directed light will be used for these activities. We will learn how to create form through light and dark values without using outline. This technique applies to all forms of drawing three-dimensional objects.
Week three: Introducing different mediums: This will include white chalk and charcoal with neutral grey backgrounds. Through exercises of lifting shadow and adding light we will explore additional techniques of creating form. This techniques most notably applies to portraits and atmospheric drawings.
Week four: Approaching composition: It is ultimately the artists job to lead the viewer through the drawing or painting to a focal point or to simply experience the emotion that the artist is attempting to address. Using basic shapes found in still-life objects, we will explore creating space and compositional direction by overlapping and placement of forms. This exercise will set a strong foundation for future drawings and/or paintings. This technique applies most notably to still life and landscape work, as well as to portrait and figurative layouts.

* Supplies: Newsprint pad of paper 18x24”, Drawing Pencils: 2B, 4B, 6B and a Kneaded eraser.
* I will provide the grey paper, chalk and charcoal

Please feel free to contact me for any additional information: deirdreshibano@yahoo.com or call: 510 734-3818 You may also check out my website @ www.deirdreshibano.com
